Everything You Need to Know About Eyelash Extensions: Preparing for Your First Appointment
I can’t believe I am sharing this on the internet…
When I went in for my first ever lash extensions appointment (back in 2019), I arrived with eyeshadow and mascara on. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to go in with a fresh face. Thinking back, I don’t even think I know what lash extensions even is or how long I was going to be there for. All I remembered was how excited I was to finally get some lashes and save time in the morning.
I ended up asking all the questions while my eyes were taped shut and my lash technician was telling me to stop talking because if I didn’t, she might accidentally poke my eyes out with her sharp tweezers. Yep, not exactly the zen experience you’d expect, right?
But hey, don’t let my rookie mistakes deter you. Lash extensions are genuinely fantastic, and with a bit of prep, your first appointment can be nothing short of magical.
Let’s go through some common FAQs:
What are Eyelash Extensions?
First off, lash extensions are not false lashes. These babies are individual synthetic fibers attached directly to your natural lashes with a semi-permanent glue. They’re designed to mimic the appearance of natural lashes, making them longer and fuller without the daily fuss of mascara.
Available in various lengths, thicknesses, and curls, these extensions allow lash artists to customize your look, enhancing your natural beauty with precision.
Is it Safe? Will My Lashes Fall Out?
Let’s bust a myth real quick: Quality lash extensions applied by a certified professional do not harm your natural lashes. The key is the application. A trained artist will ensure that each synthetic lash applied doesn't overload your natural lashes, preserving their health and preventing any horror stories about lash loss.
However, repeat after me: Always go to a trained professional. The risk of complications like Traction Alopecia, although rare, comes from incorrect application and poor lash hygiene, not the extensions themselves.
Addressing Allergies/Sensitivities
Worried about reactions? You're not alone! Make sure to have a conversation with your lash artist before your appointment. Discuss any allergies or sensitivities you know of, and consider asking for a sample set of lashes to be applied. This isn’t just about comfort—it's crucial for your safety.
If you have any conditions that you are worried about the service affecting, I’ve written a detailed guide on Contraindications that you should read over.
Lash adhesives (the glue) should be made with the main ingredient being cyanoacrylate- there are many different forms. If you ask your lash artist and they say that the adhesive they use contain formaldehyde. I would HIGHLY SUGGEST that you cancel and find a different lash artist. Formaldehyde is highly irritant and definitely not what we want.
Here’s a list of allergens that could potentially cause sensitivities or an allergic reaction (These can all be irritants, so know your enemies!):
Formaldehyde (Big red flag! If your lash artist mentions their adhesive contains this, run don’t walk to another salon.)
Benzoic Acid
Lead
Aloe (in some eye patches)
Carbon Black
Cyanoacrylate
Chemical particles emitted in the curing reaction of lash adhesive.
If you have a known allergy in any of these, unfortunately, lash extensions may not be for you. If you are unsure, always request a sample set and if a reaction does occur, have the artist remove the lashes right away.
How can I Find the Right Lash Artist?
Research, Research, Research!
You want to take your time to find a reputable lash artist. Of course, your friends recommendations are great but also look at reviews, check out their portfolio on their website and most of all, make sure they are certified or licensed.
Your lashes are precious, so pick your lash artist with care!

Communication is KEY!
At The Melrose, we believe a great lash experience starts with great communication. That’s why every lash session begins with a complimentary consultation. Here’s how to make the most of it:
Ask Questions
I highly recommend preparing a list of questions for your lash artist. Ask about the types of lashes they use, the application process, and aftercare recommendations if you aren’t sure.
Discuss Styles
It’s helpful to bring some photos of lashes you are admiring. Talk to your artist about different lash styles and what might suit you best.
Express Concerns (Always!)
If you have any sensitivities or contraindications, it’s important for you to bring it up! Your lash artist should provide you a sample set to check for any reactions.
Note: A patch test is NOT recommended and you have the right to deny one if your lash artist suggests it to you. Lash Adhesive should NEVER touch the skin and your lash artist aren’t medical professionals so they shouldn’t diagnose you for an allergic reaction!
How Long will it Take?
The process can take anywhere from 2-3 hours, depending on the desired look and the experience level of your lash artist. It's a painless procedure, but it does require you to keep your eyes closed and remain still for the duration.
How Should I Preparing for My Appointment?
To ensure everything goes smoothly, here’s your checklist:
Come Clean
Arrive with makeup-free eyes. This means no remnants of last night’s mascara!
Skip the Oils
Avoid oil-based products around your eyes on the day of your appointment.
Ditch the Falsies
Lay off any false lashes for at least a week beforehand. The adhesive used for False Lashes is difficult to break down and will affect your lash extensions’ retention.
Lens-Free
Remove contact lenses before your session.
Stay Hydrated, But Wisely
Use the restroom right before your appointment, and maybe skip that cup of coffee. Caffeine can make you twitchy, which isn’t ideal when you need to keep still.
Are lash extensions worth it?
Absolutely! With the right preparation and the perfect lash artist, you’re all set for an eye-transforming experience. Lash extensions aren’t just about looking fabulous—they’re about feeling fabulous, too.
