The Natural Lash Cycle: What You Need to Know for Healthy Lashes
I stopped getting lash extensions for a while after I was trained how to be a lash artist. I know, shocking.
It wasn’t because I fell out of love with the glamorous look they gave me, but because I had a little trust issue with my lash artist. Health and safety come first, after all!
At The Melrose, we believe that true beauty begins with understanding and caring for your natural lashes. As experts in the field of lash extensions, we recognize the importance of educating our clients about the natural lash cycle to ensure the health and longevity of their lashes. Understanding the natural lash cycle is key to maintaining the beauty and health of your lashes—whether you're a client or a budding lash artist yourself. Let’s dive into this cycle and see how you can keep those lashes looking fabulous, naturally.
Phases of the Lash Cycle
01. Anagen (Growth) Phase
This is when your lashes are living their best life, growing and thriving. Lasting about 4-6 weeks, the length and lushness of your lashes during this phase depend a lot on your genetics and how well you take care of yourself—think diet, health, and overall wellness.
02. Catagen (Transition) Phase
For about 2-3 weeks, your lashes hit the pause button. They stop growing, and the hair follicle shrinks. This is a delicate time, so remember to treat your lashes with extra care to prevent any premature breakage.
03. Telogen (Resting) Phase
The chill phase lasts between 4-9 months, where your lashes are just hanging out, fully grown. Eventually, they’ll make their exit to make room for new growth. Seeing a lash fall out with an extension attached during this phase? That’s actually a good sign—it means your extensions are doing their job without disrupting the natural cycle.
Lash Extensions: Friends or Foes of the Natural Cycle?
When applied correctly, lash extensions are like your lashes’ besties. They hang out together without causing any drama. That's why choosing a skilled lash artist is crucial—they know how to attach those extensions meticulously to avoid stressing your natural lashes. Plus, keeping up with regular maintenance appointments helps keep everything looking perfect without messing with the natural growth cycle.
Tips for Maintaining Healthy Lashes
Keep it Clean
Regular cleaning isn’t just about aesthetics; it prevents nasty build-up and infections. Use a lash shampoo to help remove all the gunk without damaging your lash extensions!
Gentle Brushing
Brush those beauties gently. Keeping them neat and tidy shouldn’t mean wrestling them into submission.
Lash Serum
Lash serums or conditioners can be your lashes' best friend, giving them a boost and promoting strength.
Hands Off
Rubbing your eyes might feel good momentarily, but it's no party for your lashes. Be gentle and keep hands-off as much as possible.
Understanding and respecting the natural lash cycle is crucial, whether you’re eyeing lash extensions or just aiming to keep your natural lashes healthy. By embracing these care tips and choosing the right professionals, you’re all set for a future of lash fabulousness!
